PUPPY (by appointment)

Basic commands will be introduced along with directed play, the use of some agility equipment, pass the puppy, and more.  For puppies 8 weeks to 6 months of age.

BEGINNERS

No previous training experience. For dogs 5 months of age or older.

ADVANCE OBEDIENCE

For dogs and handlers who have successfully completed a Beginners Class or at the discretion of the Training Director and those who are interested in preparing their dog for the Open class in AKC obedience.

AGILITY

For dogs 6 months of age or older who are under reasonable control off leash. Dogs will be taught how to execute bar jumps, weave poles, the dog walk, A-frame, teeter- totter, pause table, and tunnels. Our Agility classes are based on AKC (American Kennel Club) rules. In AKC agility the jumps are set lower than USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association) and many of the obstacles; the A-frame, dog walk, teeter totter, for example, are either slightly wider in design or lower to the ground for the safety and well-being of your dog. Any way you look at it, agility is fun for you and your dog. Walk-ins and Run-Thrus are welcome for a fee of $15.00 per run, but participants can purchase a block of 10 weeks for $120 -- a savings of $30!

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

Session 2 begins March 14 and ends May 16
Session 3 begins May 30 and ends August 1
Session 4 begins August 8 and ends October 10

Call 313-537-1859 and speak to Georgette to register!  Classes fill up early, are subject to change and participants are taken on a "first come, first served" basis. Even if you miss the first or second class, come anyway. Your instructor will help you to catch up on what you might have missed.

Agility ObstaclesPictured here starting at bottom center and going clockwise are:  the chute, the tunnel, weave poles, teeter-totter, and wing jump.  The tire jump is in the center.  The yellow sections on the teeter-totter are called the "contact points."  At least one of the dog's feet must touch each contact point going up and coming down in order for the dog to qualify on this contact obstacle.  These are just some of the obstacles you'll encounter in Agility 1 and 2.

General Requirements: Dogs must be 6 months of age or older to participate, with the exception of puppies who must be at least 8 weeks of age. Exceptions may be made for Toy breeds. All dogs must have current vaccinations and negative fecal test within the last three months. Dogs must be on leash at all times. For the safety of our students, no dog that has been previously trained for attack work will be permitted to participate in any class. Participants must be at least 18 years of age unless accompanied and supervised by a legal guardian.

                                                    TRAINEE/HANDLER RULES

1. Dogs are NOT allowed in the restrooms under any circumstances.

2. We strongly advise you to exercise (potty) your dog before entering the training building. The exercise area is across the parking lot near the telephone pole and trainees are required to clean up after their dogs. Do not use the area in front of the building. Disposal bags are available at the main tables. Bags may then be deposited in the dumpster behind the building. Do not allow your male dog to hike his leg and mark the building proper. Violators will be asked to leave the premises.

3. Should your dog have an accident during class, you will be responsible for cleaning it up. There is a mop and bucket in the closet next to the bar area. Your instructor will direct you to it.

4. Do not feed your dog before class. A dog with an empty stomach is less likely to have an accident during class.

5. Dogs must be kept on a short leash at all times unless instructed otherwise. Do not let your dog approach another dog until you are sure it is safe to do so. Even then, exercise caution.

6. Dogs who show aggression toward people or other dogs will NOT be tolerated under any circumstances. Macho behavior, canine or human, has no place on the training premises.  (PLEASE SEE BELOW)

7. Trainees should wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Tennis shoes are ideal as they offer good support and traction. Open toed or heeled shoes can cause accidents if caught on the mats.

8. Because we train with food, please bring some type of special treat for your dog other than his regular dog food. Soft or semi-moist treats cut into tiny pieces are best; hotdogs, cheese, etc. A recipe for training treats can be found on the Training Tips and Recipe page.

9. We strongly advise you to use a leather leash as they are best for maintaining good control of your dog, especially if your dog is a large breed and difficult to handle. Leather is also easier on your hands. Your instructor may require you to change leashes if deemed necessary.

10. We do not advocate the use of Halti™ or head restraint collars and therefore do not allow them in class. Chain or prong collars are more suitable for training purposes. Buckle collars are allowed but not recommended. Dog identification tags must be removed.

11. All trainees must fill out a Registration Form being sure to sign the Hold Harmless Agreement on the back. Trainees will not be allowed on the training floor until that form is completed.

12. Dogs and handlers must stay behind the ring barriers when not being worked in class.

A word of caution...we understand some of you may have problems with your dog being aggressive toward people or other dogs.  Please let us know in advance of registering for a class if you suspect your dog to be even the slightest bit aggressive and we will do our best to provide you with the assistance you need to correct this problem.
